  Introduction 
 

The Office of the Accountant General (General & Social Sector Audit), Gujarat, Rajkot is a part of the Indian Audit and Accounts Department under the Comptroller and Auditor of India(C&AG). The C&AG is a constitutional authority appointed by the President of India. The functions of the C&AG are derived mainly from the provisions of Articles 149 to 151 of the Constitution of India. The C&AG;’s Duties , Powers and Conditions of Service (DPC) Act, 1971 was passed by Parliament in 1971 under Articles 148(3) and 149 of the Constitution.

This office was established in Rajkot City as “Office of the Comptroller of Saurashtra”, which was functioning at Rajasthani Hall, Near Morbi House, Rajkot. On 15th  April, 1953, the Foundation stone of new building of the “Office of the Comptroller of Saurashtra”, Race Course Road, Rajkot was laid. After formation of Gujarat State, this office started functioning as branch of the Accountant General, Ahmadabad.

Consequent upon the restructuring of the Indian Audit and Accounts Department with effect from 1st March 1984, this office was elevated to an independent office named Accountant General (Audit)-II from May, 1985 later designated as Accountant General (Civil Audit) from September, 2004. With Effect From 01-04-2012 designated as Accountant General (General & Social Sector Audit). A branch of this office dealing with General Sector Audit functions at the accommodation provided in the Office of Accountant General (Economic & Revenue Sector Audit), Audit Bhavan, Navrangpura, Ahmedabad.
